I know this has been posted online at Pharyngula, and probably lots of other places, but I just almost spat out my coffee whilst reading it. This ‘scientific’ textbook is a real textbook, forming part of a real curriculum that is being published by Bob Jones University.
It’s insane that in the 21st century any child is subjected to such ignorant nonsense labelled as science. At least religious classes are (supposed to be) philosophical most of the time.
This is my reaction: (http://www.youtube.com/user/tpr007)
And a copy of the page I was reading:
Wow.

Nice reaction but your perceptions of what is “normal” science education in America is distorted by the ongoing, very public debate about religion and science.
There isn’t a single homeschool curriculum in this country but many. This horrible textbook is just one used by religious nut jobs. It is in no way an example of the typical science book used to educate American children. The majority of American children are not exposed to this gibberish.
You shouldn’t pretend to know this Country based on this debate with the fringe.
I didn’t say it was typical!
But, I did say, rightly so, that even allowing children to be brainwashed in this way is wrong, and would not be a legitimate curriculum in a country like Britain.
Well, it would be if the Daily Mail had its way
Ugh, the Daily Fail and its Tory-MonarchLoving cousin the Express.
Vile newspapers.
Funnily enough, I did my final year dissertation on comparing newspaper reporting and the Sun was no more partisan (probably less so) but at least doesn’t “pretend” to be a real newspaper. The Mail’s sense of importance and self-righteousness makes me sick.
